NEW YORK – For the 11th year in a row, Audio-Technica microphones were selected to outfit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. A-T supplied over 70 mics to capture the audio for this widely celebrated musical event, which took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
Inductees including John Mellencamp, Madonna, Leonard Cohen, the Dave Clark Five and the Ventures, as well as legendary blues harmonica player Little Walter and Philly soul producers Gamble & Huff. The show was broadcast live on VH1 Classic.
Audio-Technica's acclaimed Artist Elite 5000 Series UHF Wireless System was used with the AEW-T5400 handheld microphone/transmitter for frontline vocals on performances by Damien Rice, John Fogerty, Patti LaBelle, Joan Jett and Ben Harper (paying tribute to Leonard Cohen, the Ventures, Gamble & Huff, the Dave Clark Five and Little Walter, respectively), as well as for presentations by Billy Joel, Paul Shaffer and Jerry Butler. Noted saxophonist Alto Reed (Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band) performed with the Ventures using an ATM35 on an AEW-T1000 UniPak® transmitter.
The backline mic complement of A-T wired microphones included AE5400 for vocals; AE5100 for hi-hat; AT4047/SV for guitar cabinets; AT4050 for overheads; AE2500 for bass guitar cabinets; and the venerable AT4054 and AT4055 for Leslie cabinets and horns.
The technical staff for the induction ceremony was made up of professional audio industry legends. Mitch Maketansky returned as audio coordinator this year, organizing and assigning all the inputs and microphones for the event. Remote recording specialists XM Productions/Effanel Music, the company responsible for both recording the program and mixing the broadcast, used its L7 remote truck with Joel Singer and Grammy Award-winner John Harris as music mixers, mixing the event's audio onsite, while Jorge Silva was production mixer. In addition, Tony Bandelato was the RF coordinator, Dave Natale was FOH engineer and Tom Holmes was monitor mixer. Jay Vicari once again served as re-mixer for broadcast.
