OLD LYME, Conn. – Singer and songwriter Jewel is back in the spotlight, promoting a new country music album, Perfectly Clear, and hitting the road for a lengthy U.S. tour with Brad Paisley following some TV promotion, including appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Jewel, who was famously discovered while performing solo in the coffee shops of San Diego, first adopted Neumann’s KMS 105 on her 2006 tour with matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas, and is once again using the wired vocal mic with her new five-piece band.
“It’s a vocal mic that can handle not only her dynamic range but also her vocal range,” comments Jewel’s front-of-house engineer, Curt Jenkins, who has been monitor engineer/production manager for country superstars Big & Rich for some time, and also worked on Alabama’s farewell tour. “We have access to the stage thrust, with Brad Paisley, so when she goes to walk out into the audience we toss her a Sennheiser SKM 935 G2 wireless mic which is extremely stable in front of the PA.”
“I know the 105 because I’ve used it with her for three years. It works well with her,” confirms monitor engineer Adrian Silverstein, who has previously worked with the Goo Goo Dolls, Five for Fighting and John Mayer. The onstage mic complement also includes Sennheiser e 935 wired vocal mics for the bass player – the main background singer – and the keyboard player. A guitar player and drummer plus a multi-instrumentalist handling pedal steel, mandolin and banjo complete the band lineup.
Silverstein reports that he is generating wireless personal monitor mixes for everyone but the drummer and keyboard player. “The whole band is on G2 monitors – I don’t use anything else,” he says. “It makes my job too difficult to try to use anything else. The G2 stuff is so solid. I know from my cue pack that what I’m sending out is what they’re hearing.
Jewel’s summer tour with Brad Paisley of amphitheaters and similarly sized venues began in Albuquerque, New Mexico on June 11 and currently runs through late October.
