COLOGNE, Germany — An L-ACOUSTICS V-DOSC system was recently used for the 35th anniversary show of Hohner, a German folk music band, at the 14,000-capacity Lanxess Arena in Cologne.
Cologne-based PA rental company Event-Solution put together a large and complex L-ACOUSTICS system to cover the stalls and lower balcony of the arena. Event-Solution's Jochen Gotzen used 12 V-DOSC line source cabinets per side as the main PA system, with a total of 20 dV-DOSC compact line source speakers: three per side as downfills and seven per side as outfills.
This was supplemented with 12 KIVA ultra-compact line source array cabinets: four per side as nearfills and four as nearfills along the front of the stage; two KILO low frequency extension cabinets per side as nearfills; and two configurations of eight SB218 subwoofers in sub arc mode along the front of the stage.
The system was powered by two LA4 amplified controller racks, 12 RK 12/2 and four RK 12/4.
"We always use a setup like this in the Lanxess Arena," notes Gotzen. "Sometimes we use a large amount of dV-DOSC cabinets, but in this case we chose to use V-DOSC because of its powerful low-mid range combined with the fine high frequency characteristics, as it was important to have very good intelligibility of speech and lyrics.
"One of the main reasons for using L-ACOUSTICS in this arena — apart from the great sound of course — is to save us from the hard reflections, which come from the glass balconies. The straight vertical coverage of DOSC prevents the sound from hitting the glass-fronted VIP boxes surrounding the whole arena, with both V-DOSC and dV-DOSC overcoming this problem of hard reflections perfectly."
