Royal Caribbean sets a new standard in maritime luxury and entertainment with the launch of the Icon of the Seas. Debuting in January 2024, the ICON of the Seas offers a wide range of experiences designed to cater to more than 7,600 passengers. DAS Audio plays a crucial role in the overall experience with its weather-resistant sound systems, ensuring that every note and announcement provides passengers with an exceptional auditory experience.
The Challenge
The installation of sound systems on the Icon of the Seas presents a particularly difficult challenge due to the need to combat maritime environmental conditions. The wide variety of outdoor experiences, from the pool and waterslide area to Central Park and its restaurants, requires not only withstanding environmental conditions but also delivering exceptional sound. Additionally, on the Icon of the Seas, it is crucial that the systems respect the aesthetics of each space. The maritime environment can cause significant corrosion and damage to electronic components if not properly protected. This demands the use of robust, weather-resistant sound systems that offer reliable performance without compromising visual elegance.
The Solution
WR Series for Outdoor Areas: Control AV has equipped the exterior areas of the Icon of the Seas with more than 400 WR series systems. The WR series is made of birch plywood wrapped in a protective fiberglass layer and includes metallic components made of AISI 316 stainless steel to improve corrosion resistance. These systems also feature grilles treated with a cataphoresis process and three layers of protection, including acoustic foam and a hydrophobic mesh along with strategically placed drainage points to prevent water accumulation. These features ensure that the WR series can withstand elements such as salt spray, sunlight, and high humidity.
Quantum Series for Visually Sensitive Areas: At the same time, Control AV chose to install more than 500 Quantum series systems in visually sensitive areas where aesthetics are paramount without compromising durability. The Quantum series, with its aluminum enclosure and IP-66 kit, provides reliable performance in various outdoor environments without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. Available in any RAL color, these speakers integrate perfectly into the ship’s decor.
Artec Series for Dynamic Indoor Environments: The Royal Promenade features more than 100 units of Artec series systems, designed to deliver clear and distinctive sound.
These systems help ensure that passengers have a consistent experience between the outdoor areas and the purely entertainment-focused interior spaces.
Conclusion
The collaboration between DAS Audio and Control AV has ensured the successful integration of weather-resistant sound systems on the Icon of the Seas. The installation of each system meets the highest standards of maritime safety and durability, ensuring that they not only withstand humidity and salt spray but also remain secure and functional during stormy conditions. The relationship between both companies has been instrumental in perfecting weather-resistant products and solutions. The strategic use of WR, Quantum, and Artec series systems ensures exceptional audio quality and aesthetic harmony, enhancing the overall passenger experience on the Icon of the Seas.
