2014 Parnelli Awards Gala Filled with Emotion, Surprises

LAS VEGAS – It was Vegas, after all, so the bet was on. “We were all voting when Benny [Collins] would start crying, and I said he wouldn’t make it through the introduction, and I won,” laughs production professional and friend Steve Thomas. Thomas, with Michael Ahern, presented the Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Award to Collins, the live event industry’s highest honor. Collins took the stage choked up and shed some tears in giving his appreciation to all he’s worked with and made friends with over the years. It was a fitting end to an evening filled with emotions, laughs and tears.

The founder of Maryland Sound International (MSI) was named the recipient of the 2014 Parnelli Award for Audio Innovation. Goldstein was presented with the award Nov. 22, 2014 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Bob Goldstein Honored for Audio Innovation

On a cold Dec. 31st at 5 p.m. in 1997, Bob Goldstein stepped off the streets of Times Square, went to his hotel room and told his wife Vivian he was finished as a sound man. He had taken on an impossible assignment, one that others had turned down. And one who did told the Times Square Business Improvement District fella that “there’s a crazy guy in Baltimore that might be able to do it.” Goldstein had agreed to put sound in the square for New Year’s Eve — something that had never been done. There could be no support structures, no wires, no generators, no testing and adjusting and… well, another 146 restrictions.

The big cast and band kept Carin Ford busy. Bullets Over Broadway production photo by Paul Kolnik

Bullets Over Broadway Sound Mixer Carin Ford

Even though she knows it won’t last past summer, sound mixer Carin Ford loves manning the board of the Tony Award-nominated musical Bullets Over Broadway. “I really enjoy the music because I grew up listening to and playing jazz,” says Ford, who, like her father, has played saxophone. “I love the music. I can really relate to it and can get into the mix of it. I love working with this cast. We have a great band and a great cast. I haven’t been with a good ensemble like this in awhile. I really enjoy the show, and I think Susan Stroman did great work with it. That one tap number with the gangsters (“‘Tain’t Nobody’s Biz-ness If I Do”) is off the chain.”

2014 Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Benny Collins

If you don’t want to know the truth about something, don’t ask Benny Collins. Because he will tell you. That trait — at odds with the stereotype of those who get close to the stars — has taken him far in the live event business, a career that started with him hauling a Hammond B-3 in a truck as a teen to circling the world running Michael Jackson’s most audacious tours.

Hometown Hero Finalists, FOH Magazine, 2014

2014 Hometown Hero Finalist Profiles

What makes a hometown hero? What does it take to be the best, without being the biggest? FRONT of HOUSE readers have spoken and here are this year’s six Parnelli Regional Audio honorees. They all answer the two questions, and while each has whittled their own path to this year’s winner’s circle, like a snowflake, no two are exactly alike. They do, however, share commonalities: Gear, sure, but it’s the people; savvy business sense to survive and thrive and a business that is getting harder to navigate every year; and an insatiable desire to please the client. FOH readers can now visit www.parnelliawards.com and  vote on which of the six should be named the Hometown Hero Sound Company of the Year.

Event Safety Alliance Moves Into Next Phase

In what began as a conversation involving concerned live event professionals the month after the Indiana State Fair stage collapse in August 2011, the Event Safety Alliance (ESA) is expanding its influence over event safety in North America. As it celebrates its unofficial third year this month (it incorporated in February of 2012), the ESA has made solid progress in their quest to align the industry with best practices in live event safety guidelines. A four-day training session, a new strategic partnership, a new headquarters, and The Event Safety Guide are some of their recent accomplishments.
