Tour Details
We caught the beginning of the S.E.R.P.E.N.T. (Blues) Festival featuring Slash who curated an all-star blues/rock lineup of musicians that varied along the tour. For our California show date in mid-July, Slash was joined by Warren Hayes, Samantha Fish and Eric Gales for a great night of rockin’ out and where we got a few words from Slash’s audio team – FOH engineer Tim “Quake” Mark, monitor engineer John Shipp and audio tech Kenneth “Chan” Teaster.
Tim “Quake” Mark, FOH Engineer:
Tim “Quake” Mark started the year of working with Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. They had a world tour taking them to 27 countries with 42 shows. “More than half of those was fly dates, so we were limited in weight to 7,500 kilos (about 16.5K lbs.). By taking the Avid S6L 24C console I came in at 7,482 Kilos! I have grown to like the 24C surface as I have my layouts built for it, and no matter what channel or output I select all the controls are in one section, making it a little easier. I also enjoy the seamless integration of Pro tools which we multi track every show.
“Using a different P.A. every show is always a challenge and having a console with my mix ‘dialed in’ is helpful,” Quake adds. “The Avid platform is one of the easiest ones to navigate. You can walk up to a console and it makes sense, and you can get a mix going very quickly. The only complaint I have is they still have some reliability issues with heat. I pair all this with a Meyer Galileo Calisto for speaker and system management. Meyer sounds much better than the Lake processor and is very easy to navigate.”
John Shipp, Monitor Engineer:
John Shipp mixes the tour on an Avid S6L24D. Slash and the band are all on wedges and sidefills for their show, but they do have IEM’s as spares or for a guest, notes Shipp. “Aside from hearing themselves, we pay close attention to anything that is driving the song. Most of the time it’ll be kick and snare, but on occasion hi-hat/ride cymbals will be prominent. Everybody has a pretty full mix as everyone has a solo section at some point.”
Kenneth “Chan” Teaster, Audio Tech:
Slash’s audio tech, Kenneth “Chan” Teaster, is on the tour representing Clair Global. “I’m overseeing at opposite ends the moral support of Tim [“Quake” Mark at FOH] and John [Shipp at Monitors], carrying around a couple S6L’s, small L-Acoustics wedges and side fills. I’m a pretty strict point guy. It’s just maintaining equipment and being knowledgeable. I also help overseas some transition between Slash headlining and the opening acts. I have been fortunate to get to work with both John and Quake. I’ve learned from each one of them every day; both are extremely knowledgeable engineers. Fortunately for me, I have been able to meet some amazing people, including these two engineers and some legends in my last 33 years in the audio world. I’m truly humbled to work with the people I do in my job.”
