More tour details from Steve Jennings:

Kim Petras is a German singer-songwriter whose career started as a teenager, releasing a string of singles between 2008-09. Later she moved to Los Angeles at age 19 and things really started to take off with her dance-pop style music. She independently released singles from 2017-2019 and in 2021 was signed to Republic Records. In 2022 she collaborated with Sam Smith for the single “Unholy,” topping charts internationally including Billboard’s Top 100.

At FOH

We caught up with the tour and got a few words with FOH Engineer Bryon “Hot Dog” Tate when the tour came through San Francisco. Tate says Kim Petras’ musical director Drew Chaffee had some very specific “feels” they wanted on elements of the show’s audio. “Overall, they were happy to let me put my ‘fingerprint’ on the final mix…so I think it has worked out well for everyone.”

Solotech supplied the audio control, monitor system and some cities supplied a K2 PA as well. “We used several types of P.A. on this tour, including the new K3 boxes, which were actually a touch tighter on the low end than the K2 with its smaller size. We used the d&b KSL rig once or twice, which was very nice. That system really helped in some difficult rooms.” While not inclined to name and shame, Tate says, simply, “North side of Chicago – everyone reading this knows the one.”

Tate started using the Avid S6L in 2018 as a simple transition from the Profile series. “Even with its maintenance issues in its infancy, I found it to be a great step up. The sound of that console to me is as nice and warm as any digital desk I’ve worked on, and better than most. For that reason, it is still my desk of choice. I’m using the C model this time, simply because of my reduced input channels for Kim (26) and that we have had to stuff three trucks into some locations that should have been only one. It’s been both a fun theatrical show for her fans and one for me to mix.”
