Smaller, more powerful speakers require stands or poles to get them into position for proper coverage. Unlike flimsy, lightweight stands that are cumbersome to use, Gator Frameworks offers a sleek, attractive, rock-solid alternative.
The ID Series tripod speaker stands (model GFW-ID-SPKRSET) employ an internal self-raising center tube piston to elevate speakers weighing up to 60 pounds. Offering a height range of 49” to 75”, an easy-to-use clasp lever secures the speaker height and allows for incremental adjustments. A second locking cam secures the tripod legs, while the adjustable-length third leg enables setting the stand level on uneven surfaces. Each leg has a bright red tip for safety. An integrated self-storing sliding adapter allows the stand to fit either 35mm or 38mm speaker sockets.
In the Field
I purchased a set of ID series stands based on a friend’s recommendation. Although they were heavier than typical aluminum stands, I was impressed with their solid build. The first thing I noticed was the compact, sleek, folded cylinder design. Unlike other stands, there are no protruding knobs or levers that typically get lost or broken. To open the legs, simply unlatch their cam lock and twist the top section. Once the legs opened, I latched the cam to secure them. The adjustable third leg made it easy to level the stand and maintain stability. No longer do I need that box of wood shims.
I really liked the self-storing sliding 35 to 38mm adapter, as I didn’t have to worry about having the right diameter stand when packing for the gig. To use the adapter, simply press in the locking buttons and lift it up until it latches securely in place.
Once the speaker is seated on the stand, opening the clasp lever releases the piston and the speaker rises. When the desired height is reached, simply close the clasp to lock the speaker in place. Note that speakers weighing over 45 pounds will require a little assistance to raise them. To lower the speaker, hold the round grip handle, release the clasp, and pull down on the handle. When the speaker is lowered, simply close the clasp to lock the piston and remove the speaker.
Also available is the model GFW-ID-SPKR-SPSET, designed for mounting speakers 37”-57” above a subwoofer, which has similar features, but minus the legs. These have standard-sized pole mounts that easily convert to M20 threaded mounts to securely attach to most subwoofers. Street price is $259/pair, including carry bag.
The Verdict
After using the ID series stands, I was sold. I really appreciated not having to struggle to raise a 38-pound speaker and it was fun to watch the speaker magically rise on its own. I immediately also purchased a set of the ID series sub poles to replace ones that came with my subs. My back has never been happier.
