Heil Sound's PR 31 BW came about after Bob Workman, who mixes FOH for the Charlie Daniels Band, called Bob Heil and asked if it would be okay for him to cut the chassis of his PR 30 in half.
"I believe his exact words were, ‘Will this void my warranty?'" said Heil. Warranty issues resolved, Heil and Workman figured out how they could configure the chassis to hold all of the components of the existing Heil Sound PR 30. Heil now had the makings of a new large diaphragm dynamic mic in a compact 4-inch chassis that could be placed virtually anywhere.
The PR 31 BW can be used for a variety of applications, and is particularly well-suited for drum applications, including "underheads," which many sound professionals are turning to instead of traditional overhead miking. It is also well-suited as a vocal mic for drummers. It provides -40 dB of rear rejection and can handle over 150 dB of SPL.
Along with the Charlie Daniels Band, the PR 31 BW has been used so far with Leon Russell, Pete Yorn, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains.
