The Smart DI from Optogate features an integrated microcontroller and an LCD display to address some of the problems commonly associated with traditional DI boxes: the need to hunt for signals between stage and desk, the lack of fine adjustments of the input signal and the "pop" heard when connecting or removing an input connector.
Because it is designed without a transformer, the Smart DI also promises to improve impulse responses and distortion values on low frequencies. The unit's XLR output is also muted if no connector is plugged in, and gets switched on after a brief interval (0.8 seconds) when input connectors are plugged in. A footswitch allows the artist to mute the Smart DI again if necessary.
The output signal can be adjusted with a trimpot, with a bar graph providing visual support. The input impedance also can be switched between 500 k-Ohm and 2 M-Ohm to prevent high impedance sources from sound coloration. Five dip switches allow users to make further adjustments to make the unit suited to their needs.
The Smart DI works with 48V phantom power and an external 12V supply.
