SHANGHAI — The record-setting LED Skydome at Harmony Times Square in Suzhou Industrial Park is an impressive sight, with 20 million LEDs covering a 500-meter-by-32 meter canopy above shops and restaurants at street level.
To make sure the audio experience is impressive as well — and in sync with the visuals, despite a multi-story gap between the LED canopy and the crowds below — the audio system uses 106 Renkus-Heinz STX-7/44AS-WR loudspeakers and 38 DRS18-2BW dual 18-inch weather resistant subwoofers.
More than 160 Camco Tecton Series 38.4 amplifiers provide over 600,000 watts of power to the audio system, setting a record in terms of sheer ceiling speaker power.
But as John Ho of TICO/CAH, Renkus-Heinz distributors for China, noted, “precisely controlled directivity” is just as important as sheer power in making the 3D AV system work.
The STX7 loudspeakers’ combination of Complex Conic horns and CoEntrant drivers provide directional accuracy down to 350Hz. The dual 12-inch woofers extend LF response down to 40 Hz with added horizontal directivity.
The Camco Tecton Series amplifiers are also equipped with UCA-T-AN cards enabling the WINCAI (Camco Amplifier Interface) audio management system, which allows for system management and local signal processing adjustment via each amplifier’s UCA controller modules.
Camco’s CISUS software provides remote operation of the CAI audio network management control software via each amplifier’s RJ45 interface, while the Tecton amplifiers’ power regime, which offers stability down to a single Ohm load with digitally-controlled gain setting, extends the ability to run at the very low impedances implied by the project’s longest loudspeaker cable run of 230 meters.
The installation was done by Beijing Zhongguang Radio & TV Engineering Installation Co., with equipment supplied by Foshan Tian Chuang Zhongdian Trading Co., Ltd.
