Estonia Celebrates Record Attendance with Meyer Sound

TALLINN, ESTONIA —The three-day Estonian Youth Song and Dance Celebration has never been a small event, and its 10th anniversary was no exception. Held every five years, this year’s landmark event featured more than 35,000 participants, including 831 choirs, 127 dance groups, 47 orchestras, as well as a 15,000-member children’s choir and 200-piece brass band.

Moving in a three-kilometer procession, these young dancers and musicians performed indigenous music for an audience of some 80,000.  To deliver the diverse choral and instrumental music on such a large scale, Tallinn, Estonia-based Eventech deployed a system of Meyer Sound MILO high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and M’elodie ultracompact high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers.

“The festival has grown so large, this year we had to rent additional MILO cabinets from our competition,” says Eventech General Manager Tõnu Susi.

The main system was comprised of left and right arrays of nine MILO high-power loudspeakers and one MILO 120 high-power expanded coverage curvilinear array loudspeaker per side, with 12 700-HP ultrahigh-power subwoofers in the center. Six delay towers throughout the area employed 16 additional MILO boxes, as well as 16 M’elodie cabinets. The entire system was driven by a Galileo loudspeaker management system using two Galileo 616 processors.

“MILO really delivered, and M’elodie is just amazing — so much power from such a small box,” says Susi. “The conductor and several of the orchestra members said that it was the best sound they’ve heard in the history of the festival.”

Eventech, sound provider in the region, is enjoying one of its busiest years ever, supplying sound systems for festivals, tours and events for customers like BMW and Absolut Vodka. “We bought our first MILO system in 2002 and have been busy ever since,” says Susi.

To support the company’s busy schedule of live sound events throughout Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Lithuania, Eventech’s equipment not only has to perform consistently under the rigors of constant use, it must also withstand the humid and rainy weather in the Baltic region, including the downpour during setup at the Festival.

The rigging and weather protection feature of Meyer Sound loudspeakers have more than exceeded Susi’s expectation. The rain hoods, in addition to innovative weather protection treatments of the components, ensure Eventech’s gear performs robustly show after show.

The Youth Song and Dance Celebration, which features exclusively young musicians, is only one of Estonia’s large-scale music festivals. Alternating with the Youth Celebration is the even larger Estonian Nationwide Song and Dance Celebration, which will take place in 2009.
