The Guess Who, now comprised of Derek Sharp, Michael Staertow, Leonard Shaw and Michael Devin along with founding member Garry Peterson, is still actively touring decades after Peterson and former bandmates Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman hit the big time in 1969 and 1970 with rock ‘n’ roll hits including “American Woman,” “These Eyes” and “No Time.” For their Oct. 20 concert at the Golden Nugget’s 600-seat showroom, the band brought their own monitor console and turned to Traver Concert Services for backline gear. New World Audio owner Sonny Maupin, who supplied the FOH console and snake system for this gig, had also provided the venue’s Meyer Sound house system “many years” before. “It’s still working great,” he added.
While more modest in size that other casino showrooms on the Las Vegas strip, the Golden Nugget showroom has a storied past, hosting a long roster of top artists over the decades. They include Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Kenny Rogers (who had also, at one point, worked as the venue’s director of entertainment). Other music and comedy acts appearing at the venue include Rich Little, Steve & Eddie, Don Rickles, Melissa Manchester, Merl Haggard, Willie Nelson, Wynonna Judd, Randy Travis, Leon Russell, Taynia Tucker, BJ Thomas, Johnny Cash, Litta Ford, Ronnie Milsap, David Brenner, Tony Orlando, David Cassidy, Vince Neil, Martha Reeves, Hank Williams Jr., Mel Tillis, Night Ranger, Slaughter, Soundgarden, Great White, Glen Campbell, Foghat, Aldo Nova, Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Jefferson Starship, The Yardbirds, Ambrosia, Dokken, The Cowsills, Tracy Lawrence, Tommy James & The Shondells, Don McLean, Gary Pucket & The Union Gap, Blue Oyster Cult, The Grass Roots, Mark Wills, The Bellamy Brothers, Little Texas, Mark Chestnut, Pablo Cruise, Eddie Money, Slaughter, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Spinners, Grand Funk Railroad, Rick Derringer, Rare Earth, Christopher Cross, 38 Special, Aaron Neville, Alabama, Lee Ann Womack, The Charlie Daniels Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Julio Iglesias, The Beach Boys, George Benson and John Denver.
